How to do research in finance

Unlike hard science, research in finance issues have to rely on historical data for conducting various test, usually statistical, to prove a hypothesis formulated during the proposal stage. The most frequent terms observed in finance research literature are "statistically significant", a determining factor whether certain returns or variables are strongly attributed to certain factors. This is the case for academic research.
What about finance research in the commercial arena?

The market for the first day of the week closed higher with the ASX S&P 200 benchmark index ended 0.1% higher after last Friday's plunge. The market is deemed to be on a volatile ride as outlook for the US economy is rather hazy. Reports, over the weekend, are expecting the market to shed 24 points in the near term as the US economy is seen to be losing steams. Again, expect the unexpected as just two weeks earlier, outlooks were rather rosy. This is the market afteall. The Portfolio 1.5 - EW seems to be losing momentum recently with total value ended 7.00% after a high of 10% weeks earlier.
