The General Equation of Happiness
April 2nd 2007 04:25
It is undeniable that money forms a large part of happiness for most people. Money, financial security or excesses form the base of satisfaction and joy because, in a strict sense of rationality and avoiding philosophical arguments, having enough or more is definately better than not having. Think marginal utility.
This does not mean that money is the sole function of happiness but it does contribute exponentially. Of course, there is inherent happiness that money cannot buy, such as love.
Generally, happiness can be divided into two parts; Inherent and Derived (financial based, ie: money). The following is the formulation for the General Equation of
Happiness, still in hypothetical stage.
The General Equation of Happiness
H1 = Inherent Happiness
H2 = Derived Happiness (from money)
Happiness = H1 x H2
Happiness = H^2
So asumming you only have H1, the equation will be
Happiness/H2 = H1
Which means your Happiness is discounted by Derived (from money) happiness because of the scarcity of cash or financial capability.
Therefore in the absence of or having a low H2, it will lower your General Happiness.
As this General Formula is in its proposal stage, the scale of measurement is yet to be determined to provide a reliable frame of reference that could invoke comparability.
