Fly Asian Express (FAX) a Malaysian rural airliner, owned by Tony Fernandes who is also the Chief Executive of AirAsia, has annouced that it has been granted air traffic rights to operate long-haul services to destinations such as Australia, Europe and Asia not served by the country's flag-carrier, Malaysian Airlines (MAS).

Benkaiser.NET: MAS operate daily flights to Australia's major cities; Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane and as such, FAX, for its Australian destinations, could be flying to smaller cities such as Darwin, Broome or Cairns. It is unlikley that MAS would allow FAX to fly into regional or local airports in the vicinity of thier destinations for fear of upsetting the profits from the present lucrative routes.
And on Thursday's edition of Melbourne's broadsheet, The AGE reported; "The shareholders of FAX may be in discussions with easyJet and AirAsia, but we cannot make a comment on that," said Mr Fernandes, who is also an owner of FAX.
FAX did not annouce such tie-ups during the press conference today but it is not far from sight and signatures. It is a matter of time that budget long-haul flights would be made of a feeder system, to the delights of passengers.

Darwin and Cairns would certainly be excited from the prospects of being chosen as the hub and undoubtedly, more tourists and also the possible economic spillovers. Not that it affects you, but its good for the economy overall.
I think the foreign budget airlines would just land and end in one of the smaller cities and any other interior routes could be served by liners such as JetStar, Virgin Blue or even Regional Express.
Cheers
